“Cougar Courtyard” Sensory Playground Goals

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 36 children are diagnosed with autism in the United States, a number that has been steadily increasing. The Kutztown Area School District has seen a similar rise in the number of students who have individualized educational plans requiring advanced support related to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other sensory processing challenges. To assist in meeting the needs of these students, the KASDEF is looking to invite KASD alumni, families, businesses, and individuals to help build a sensory playground at Kutztown Elementary School, which houses the Elementary Life Skills Support program. A sensory playground is a versatile and inclusive environment with equipment specifically designed to stimulate sight, sound, touch, smell, and balance. Together we can build a space that helps children improve their motor skills, social interactions, emotional regulation and cognitive abilities in a safe and engaging setting.

Campaign Goals

The cost of the project goals above, including equipment on the playground surface, will be $140,000. Our opportunities are endless though! If we raise more than the goal, additional pieces of equipment can be added to the playground to enhance the space. We aim to raise $140,000 in full from January 1, 2025 through June 30, 2025, so the playground is ready for use as the 2025-2026 school year begins.
