Support-A-Scholar program for the 2022-2023 school year
The Kutztown Education Foundation Support-A-Scholar program for the 2022-2023 school year supported 24 students in a total of 37 courses. The Education Foundation subsidized a portion of the dual enrollment course tuition once the course was completed by the student. The students took advantage of courses such as Physics, Chemistry, Business, Public Speaking, and Writing at both Kutztown University (KU) and Reading Area Community College (RACC).
Class of 2023 Graduate, Ky Brantley, dually enrolled in the Public Speaking course at Kutztown High School through RACC. KAHS teacher Ms. Williams taught the course. "We learned and performed a series of speeches and techniques. This course will benefit me in my next academic career because public speaking is a skill a lot of people should have." She added, "...it is a fear of many, but it is a skill that is going to be used for life, not just in school." She said it wasn't a huge load academically in addition to her high school courses and enjoyed the smaller setting compared to attending a larger class size in college.
Dominick Pizzelanti, Class of 2023 graduate, took three courses over the past three years as a dually enrolled student through RACC. The courses were Public Speaking taught by Ms. Engwall, Chemistry taught by Mr. Bricker, and Physics taught by Dr. Mahoney at Kutztown High. Dominick said "These three courses benefitted me by helping me prepare for the vigor of college, while still in high school. They also helped because the credits transferred to Penn State University, where I will continue my academic career. It is a huge help to get me on the right track for my college career. I think Support-A-Scholar is a great program." Dominick thought the courses were a fun challenge for him to take during high school and he was happy he took on the additional rigor of dual enrollment.
Graduate Mikayla Trubilla completed Chemistry II Honors, Physics, and Public Speaking as a dual enrollment student at KAHS and through RACC. Mr. Bricker, Dr. Mahoney, and Ms. Williams taught the courses respectively at Kutztown High. "Taking these classes during high school allowed me to get a semester ahead in college without having to pay an insane amount. It also allowed me to get a feeling for what college classes are like." When she enrolled in the dual enrollment classes, she was grateful to learn that a portion of the cost for completing those courses was covered by the Kutztown Education Foundation. Transferring those credits to Penn State University where she will continue her academic career gives her a leg up in her collegiate studies.
Many students were able to transfer the credits to their chosen university helping them academically and financially for the future. Another way we are Improving Education Together.
